Beautiful Funny Japanese Kites


 

Wide varieties of kites are made and enjoyed in the world, for example, there are Chinese dragon kites, Indian colorful kites, and some people enjoy kitesurfing.

In Japan, flying kites is traditionally considered as a new year’s activity.

Japanese kites are made of washi (Japanese paper) and bamboo.

In Higashiomi, [W:Shiga prefecture], “Yokaichi Giant Kite Festival” is held on the fourth Sunday every May.

At the festival, they fly hyakujo kite which is 13 meters by 12 meters and weigh 700 kilograms.

In the 300 years history of the festival, there is a record that a giant kite that was twice as large as the hyakujo kite was flown in 1882.

 

This is a hyakujo kite made of washi and bamboo sticks.

I think there are maybe larger kites in the world but this is the largest paper made kite.
