During winter, a lot of fisher’s tents are seen on iced lakes in Japan. Their target is wakasagi (Japanese smelt), and it’s only about 15cm or smaller.

In early and late winter, people catch wakasagi by lake shores or on boats but during the middle of January to March, when lakes get iced, hole fishing is available on lakes, and it’s the most popular way to catch wakasagi.

First, drill the iced lake to make a hole that is a little bigger than a baseball.
The thickness of ice sheet is usually 15 cm or thicker.

Wakasagi is often cooked as tempura or simply fried.
