[Photoblog] Mitarashi Dango

Mmm…they look good! Grilled mitarashi dango at its birthplace, Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto.
The top dango is separated from the other four, and there are two theories to explain it.

1: Because when Emperor Go-Daigo (1288-1339) scooped up a handful water from the Mitarashi pond (purifying water placed at the entrance of a shrine), a big bubble came up and four more bubbles came up shortly after that.

2: Five-dango represents human body. The top one is the head and remaining four are arms and legs.
