HANAFUDA — Japanese Playing (Flower) Cards

hanafudaHanafuda are Japanese traditional playing cards, used to play a number of games.

The name Hanafuda means flower cards.

Each card designed flower or grass that represent a month, and there are 4 same flower designed cards to make 1 suit; therefore, there are 12 suits (months) and 48 cards total.

Some cards designed animals, oblong cards or other seasonal scenes, and those are higher points than plain flower cards.

There are different ways to play, but most popular ones are koi-koi, hana-awase and hachi-hachi.

This website describes the rules.  There are free hanafuda games online. Here is one of them.
