TATAMI — Japanese straw floor mat

[W:Tatami] is a floor mat woven of rice straw, used traditionally in Japanese homes.

It’s soft and very comfy flooring.

Tatami are made in uniform sizes.

Because a Japanese room sized for tatami mats, they always perfectly fit in the room.

There are two different layouts for tatami, auspicious and inauspicious arrangements.

Usually the former one is used, and the later one is used for a sad event like a funeral.

In the auspicious way, the junction pattern forms T shapes, and in inauspicious way, they forms + plus shapes.

One of the good things about tatami room is that it’s easier to change the floor unlike carpets or wood floor.
